Traditional Chinese Massage

After a long day enjoying the countryside in Yangshuo, a traditional Chinese massage from a local expert is a great way to relax. There are two main types of traditional Chinese massage – Tui na (推拿) which focuses on pushing, stretching and kneading the muscle and Zhi Ya (指壓) which focuses on pinching and pressing at acupressure points. Both are based on principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).  Tui Na works to correct the patient’s problems, from musculoskeletal conditions, to diseases, cancers and even minor and major headaches. Alternatively you can just ask for a relaxing massage without the healing aspect which in Chinese is referred to as Anmo (按摩).

There are a number of traditional techniques on offer including; Foot Massage, Foot Bath & Shoulder Massage, Full body massage, Facial Treatment, Scraping and Cupping.

Foot massage: The foot massage is an important component of traditional Chinese medical science and is one of the most unbelievably relaxing treats that you can experience. Foot reflexology is “pressure therapy” and involves applying focused pressure to certain known reflex points located in the foot to cure or prevent disease and thoroughly relax the body.

Foot Bath & Shoulder Massage: This combines heat, water and traditional massage techniques enabling for greater circulation in opposing points of the body which leaves you feeling both relaxed and refreshed. Particularly a favourite of walkers after a long hike in the Yangshuo countryside.

Full body massage: The full body massage treats every inch of your body from head to toe and is guaranteed to make you slip into a blissful state of relaxation. Feel refreshed and renewed as all your muscles are massaged in the total release full body treatment. The massage can be given with or without essential oils and you can even keep your clothes on.

Cupping: is an ancient Chinese form of medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin; practitioners believe this mobilises blood flow in order to promote healing.

Other combinations of massage and traditional healing therapies are available on request.

Getting There: There are several good outlets in town or have a therapist treat you in the comfort and privacy of your room.
Times/Duration: Times are flexible and can be arranged to suit your needs.
Booking Information: contact Yangshuo Insider or your local accommodation staff to arrange a massage for you.

      Hello Alicja,

Definitely worth checking out are the blind masseurs of Yangshuo, we have heard great feedback about them, just did not try them yet ourselves (but I will soon!). To get to their massage shop, starting from the bus station in Yangshuo, go to the gas station (in the direction of Guilin) and turn left in the street before the gas station that heads towards the only traffic lights in Yangshuo (quite a landmark, signaled on most Yangshuo tour maps). Cross the street, you are now on your way to the Yulong river area and find the Chinese blind massage shops in the first street on your right. Total distance from the Yangshuo bus station (or Yangshuo park) is about 1.5km at most. Particularly during the October holidays a blind massage will be more reasonably priced than any of the massage centers in the center.
The health and Chinese medicine center has a more central location and offers good value with full Chinese body massages for 88Y/hr where you and your partner can share a comfortable private room. The center has well maintained facilities, you get massage clothes and nice cup of tea and the Chinese massage girls who are well trained have never let us down so far. Prices will most likely be higher than usual though. There are cheaper places around but I would not risk a poor massage if you are just passing by.
Hope this helps in getting you a great Chinese massage!
      Cheers, Yangshuo-Insider
