Guilin to Yangshuo

Coming on a Li-river cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo down the Li River is probably the most enjoyable way to get from Guilin to Yangshuo and enjoy the magnificent scenery of hundreds of karst mountains towering up aside of you from both shores of the river. On the other hand it may not be worth to spend a night in Guilin since all these cruises leave the early morning and you may want a quick transfer per taxi to Yangshuo which does not take much longer than if you were to go from the Guilin airport to Guilin centre. And since March 2013 travellers can board the shorter Li-river cruise from Yangshuo to Guilin passing by the famous view on the 20Y note near Xingping up to to Yangdi which covers the most scenic stretch of the Li-river for about half the price. Alternatively one could opt for a shorter taxi ride to Yangdi and board one of the smaller motorised rafts from Yangdi to Xingping (to spend the night or) be picked up there afterwards.

How to get from Guilin Airport to Yangshuo

There are 3 ways to get from Guilin airport to Yangshuo. The most convenient way is by taxi or mini-van right after your flight arrival. If you timed your Guilin flight well then the Guilin airport to Yangshuo shuttle bus could be ideal with 2 fixed departure times as well. Outside of these times the airport shuttle bus to Guilin centre followed by a public bus to Yangshuo offers a economical albeit time consuming way as well.

From Guilin airport to Yangshuo by private taxi / minivan

How to get to Yangshuo from Guilin airport by TaxiBy far the easiest way to get from Guilin airport to Yangshuo is by taxi. Expect to pay between ¥300-490 depending on the vehicle, and depending on whether you take the G65 highway (additional ¥30 for toll fees but saves about 20 minutes) or the main road through Guilin centre. Note that taking the highway is faster, more scenic, less bumpy and better for your blood pressure as you will not have to watch as your driver plays chicken with oncoming traffic while passing all the transport trucks moving at 40km/h on the regular road.

We suggest to have your pick-up arranged with a driver from Yangshuo as local drivers in Guilin use older cars that would not pass the safety regulations, will overcharge you (they learned travellers will generally take their taxi anyway without other options left) and generally drivers in Guilin only know the location of the bus station where they will drop you off. You would then still need to arrange transportation to your accommodation in Yangshuo.

For your transfer from Guilin airport to Yangshuo we can organise a taxi (max 4 people with luggage that can fit in an average sized trunk of a Chinese Sedan), a 7 seat mini-van or an 11-14-18 seat bus for you, day or night. While most drivers won’t wait in case your flight would be delayed, a frequent occurrence in China, our drivers on the other hand will wait for you with a sign with your name no matter how long your flight has been delayed, day or night, at the standard rates.

From Guilin airport to Guilin / Yangshuo by shuttle bus

how-to-get-to-yangshuo-from-guilin-by-bus
There is a direct airport shuttle bus service from Guilin Airport to Yangshuo daily between 09:30 and 22:30. The journey takes about 80 minutes to cover 75 km and will take you to the Yangshuo North bus station from where there are electric carts to take you into the center of Yangshuo. Tickets can be purchased at the ticket offices near the bus stops and cost 50 yuan per person.

Bus Route Departure Times
Guilin Airport – Yangshuo North Bus Station 09:30 – 11:30 – 13:30 – 15:30 – 17:00 – 18:30 – 20:00 – 22:30

To Guilin center, there is an airport shuttle bus (40min, 25Ypp) about half an hour within each flight arrival to the Guilin South train station. There are plenty of taxis that can take you to your accommodation in Guilin or you could take a bus to the Yangshuo North Bus Station too. Beware that taxi drivers at the bus stations do not use meters and are notorious for overcharging passengers with 30-50Y fees. As always, clearly agree on a price from beforehand as explained in our Yangshuo China Travel tips.

Getting here: Airport bus / Public bus
Schedule: Varies – generally within 30 minutes although they may wait longer until full and when supply is less in high season.
Duration: Airport bus to Yangshuo 90 min / Guilin 40 minutes.

How to get from Guilin center to Yangshuo

From Guilin centre to Yangshuo by local or express bus

how-to-get-to-yangshuo-from-guilin-by-busFrom the Guilin south train and bus station there are frequent buses to the bus station in Yangshuo. The ones that depart from the square in front of the Guilin railway station (80-90 minutes, ¥25 (2016), buy tickets on the bus once it is underway) stop wherever people or carriage need to be picked up or dropped off so the ride may take anywhere between 1.5 to over 2 hours. Invariably touts will try to sell you a more expensive ticket before the bus departs, even while you are getting onto the bus. The best approach is simply to ignore them.

Express buses (¥25, buy tickets from counter inside terminal) depart every half hour from the main Guilin bus station (Zhongshan Zhong Lu) and take about one and a half hours.

From Guilin North Train Station to Yangshuo by local or express bus

Update 11/2016: To get to Yangshuo from the Guilin North bus station just became a lot easier. There are now direct shuttle buses leaving the Guilin North bus station at 10:30 – 12:30 – 14:00 – 15:30 – 16:30 – 17:30 – 18:30 – 20:00. The ride would take about 2 – 2.5 hrs as the road between Guilin and Yangshuo is completely being redone (planned to be finished summer 2017), hence very bumpy for about half the distance. I doubt they’ll take the highway as it incurs quite expensive fees. Beyond shuttle times travellers are required to take a local bus to the South train or bus station first (30min) and then take either a express or local bus to Yangshuo. Total travel time from the North train station to Yangshuo with a shuttle / public transportation can be anywhere between 2 – 2.5 / 2.5 – 3.5 hrs. A private transfer could take you straight to your accommodation in Yangshuo in about 1h40min.

Getting here: Local bus
Times/Duration: 07:00-22:00 From center – 90min / From North station 2-3.5 hrs.

From Guilin center to Yangshuo by private taxi / minivan

How to get to Yangshuo from Guilin centre by TaxiTaxis from the Guilin center or South train and bus station to Yangshuo cost about 250Y per taxi or 310Y per mini-van and there might be a surcharge depending on the location of your accommodation in Guilin. If you arrive Guilin on a high speed train from Guangzhou you will arrive at the North train station, located about a 20min drive further north from the south station. At this time there is no highway connecting Guilin center and Yangshuo in a way that would decrease travel time so the only option is the main road between Guilin and Yangshuo. The ride from Guilin center to Yangshuo may take 1h20 with an extra 20-30min for the north train station. Note that also here it is better to have your pick-up arranged by a driver in Yangshuo as local drivers in Guilin use older cars that would not pass the safety regulations, will most likely overcharge you and that drivers in Guilin only know the location of the bus station where they will drop you off. You would then still need to arrange transportation to your accommodation in Yangshuo. Check our trains to Yangshuo page for more information about the best train routes here.

Getting here: Private Taxi/Mini-Van
Times/Duration: From center 80min / From North train station +20min

How to get from Gongcheng to Yangshuo

From Gongcheng train station to Yangshuo

How to get to Yangshuo from Guilin centre by Taxi
Since 2015 the Gongcheng train station opened. This station is part of the new high speed railway route between Guangzhou (near Hong Kong), Guilin (nearest city to Yangshuo) and Guiyang (capital of Guizhou province). For more info on this station and the route see our train to Yangshuo page. As far as we know transfers from the Guilin North station are still pretty inconvenient with public transport involving 2 stops to get anywhere out of the bus station in Yangshuo. And if they would be launched in the meantime it would still take longer than a taxi along the main road which takes over 2.5 hours now they are upgrading the road on several stretches along the way. A taxi by highway would get you here in about 1h40min. To organise your transfer we’d need your train number and scheduled arrival time.

From Xingping train station to Yangshuo

How to get to Yangshuo from Guilin centre by Taxi
In 2016 the Yangshuo train station opened in Xingping and has become the closest train station to Yangshuo. Just as the Gongcheng station it serves the Hezhou to Nanning (North/South) and the Guangzhou – Guilin – Guiyang (Guizhou province) (East-West) routes. For more info on these trains see our train to Yangshuo page. From the Yangshuo train station in Xingping there are frequent buses to the Yangshuo South Bus Station, located about 3km outside of Yangshuo center. The bus will first stop at the Xingping bus station (10 min) before heading to Yangshuo (1 hour).

Getting from Guilin to Yangshuo by Boat (Li River Boat Cruise)

Li-river boat cruise Guilin to Yangshuo

How to get to Yangshuo from Guilin by Boat
Arguably the most scenic and enjoyable way to reach Yangshuo (when the weather permits) is coming to Yangshuo on a Li-river boat cruise. You will pass by what is considered some of China’s most famous scenic views, including a mountain view that can be seen on all ¥20 bills.

Before booking such river cruise verify which boat you will be on as standards can vary a lot. Ask for a picture to be sure it is what you had in mind. Do not go with the CITS travel agents that approach you just when you get off the train and will either overcharge or sell you devalued trips in their office inside the train station. We only organise tickets for the Li-river boat cruise of the highest available standard, the so-called luxury foreign cruise type with direct private taxi transfers from your hotel in Guilin to the wharf, 40km outside of Guilin. This way you are not taken on a shopping tour across Guilin waiting for other passengers from other hotels to board a shared van along the way. For more information about this cruise type, prices, time schedules and booking information, see our Li-river cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo page. For a river cruise per smaller motorised raft check out our Li-river rafts from Yangdi to Xingping page.

Yulong river bamboo raft trip

Another great way to take full advantage of your days here and limit the time spent in the car from Guilin to Yangshuo is to combine a Guilin airport (or centre) transfer with a relaxing river trip on the beautiful Yulong river along the way. We explain this tour option in more detail on our Yangshuo tours page.

To get back to Guilin check out our Yangshuo to Guilin page.

  1. Hi

Would like to learn Yang 24 Form Tai Chi. Found Mr Wang Zhi Ping, who teaches this form on the net.
Do you know anything about this master?
Are there other master who teach Yang 24 Form in Yangshou area?
    Regards
    Robert

    • Yangshuo Insider says:

      Hello Robert,

I happen to have trained with Master Wang Zhi Ping for several months who is a very warm and impressive master. However do beware of your postures yourself as I saw many practitioners leaving the school with injuries and after a few months I had to leave myself as well. I then continued my training with Master Fu (full time) and Master Kim (once in a while), both I can recommend wholeheartedly. Both these masters do focus on Chen rather than on Yang, perhaps Master Yang Dong Bao could the best choice for you. I suggest to have a read in the China tai chi guide, a great source of information about tai chi schools and styles in Yangshuo and across China. The China Tai Chi Guide is a creation of long time Yang and Chen practitioner Anthony Fidler who started his training in Yangshuo and China about 20 years ago!

      • Thanks for the info. I shall take your advice into consideration when determining the number of hours to put into each day. But…I really want to do Yang 24 forms Mr Wang is the only person advertising Yang, rather than Chen style, that I have found.

        Many thanks

        Robert

Hi, I heard there is bridge that I can go to in downtown Guilin that has the boats going to Yongshou. I don’t want the one hour agency bus ride to the dock. What is the chinese name of this bridge or place in downtown Guilin. I want the 5 hour boat ride, not 3 hours.. Thanks you

    • Jono says:

      Hi Trey,

The dock is called Zhujiang dock, but the cruise company only uses their drivers who are familiar with the dock and the procedure to get onto the right boat. I’m not aware of the bridge you mention as having boats to get you in to Yangshuo.

      All the best,
      Jono

  3. Anna says:

Hi, I am taking a bus from Changsha to Guilin tomorrow, July 21st at 12:30 pm. When I arrive to Guilin, what’s the best way to get to Yangshuo? Thanks.

    • Jono says:

      Hi Anna,

It’s very easy and cheap to get the bus to Yangshuo from Guilin, just buy your ticket for 22Y on the Express bus from the counter. There will be other people around shouting about the bus to Guilin. You can take these buses but they tend to hang around Guilin picking up passengers until they are full, or even over crowded. Best to get the official ticket from inside the bus station. We can of course arrange a driver to pick you up and bring you to Yangshuo, but the bus is really easy and they are very frequent.

      I hope this helps,
      Jono

  4. How much would you charge for transportation from Guilin Airport to Rock Abond Inn in Yangshuo? I arrive on June 1.

  5. What would be your price for a transfer from Guilin AirPort to the Yangshuo Village Retreat Hotel on 21th of June?
I don’t mind to be in a car or minibus with other travelers.

    Regards,
    Theo

    • Yangshuo Insider says:

      Dear Theo,
A direct transfer per taxi from Guilin airport to Yangshuo Village Retreat is 320Y for the recommended highway route or 290Y along the main road. If someone else would happen to be on the same flight and heading for Yangshuo we will ask if they are willing to share a mini-van with you, for the moment we can register the taxi. What is your flight number and scheduled arrival time?
      Cheers,
      Steven

Our licensed drivers can collect you from the airport and take you to your hotel for 320Y to a centrally located hotel or hostel in Yangshuo. You may find better prices out there, but the drivers we use are licensed to carry foreign tourists and have cars less than 3 years old.
